Supporting Children and Families Through Sensory Regulation

Many children and young people experience sensory overload in their daily lives — whether at school, at home, or in busy environments. Sensory regulation helps individuals manage how they respond to sound, light, movement, and touch, supporting emotional balance and calm.

Sensory support does not need to be complex or clinical. Simple elements such as soft lighting, tactile materials, quiet spaces, and predictable routines can make a meaningful difference for children and families.

For parents and carers, having access to sensory-friendly environments can provide reassurance and reduce stress. It allows families to engage in activities knowing that their child’s needs are understood and supported.

At Growing Together Education and Wellbeing CIC, we are piloting a small sensory wellbeing space to better understand local need and gather feedback. This pilot allows us to learn what works best for our community and ensures that future provision is shaped by real experiences.

Our long-term aim is to develop a dedicated sensory and wellbeing space that supports emotional regulation, inclusion, and positive engagement for children, young people, and families.
